Neverland Class update

This week we have been recapping the sounds ‘oi’, ‘oy’, ‘ai’ and ‘ay’. We explored words with these sounds and started adding a range of suffixes to them independently. In Maths we have continued exploring multiples of ten and have started looking at numbers between 10 and 100 in depth. Our afternoons have been spent getting creative. We have studied what a sculpture is, sketched an Australian animal and then made an Austrialian animal clay sculpture – which all look amazing! Please continue reading at home and updating reading records. Reading at home helps with our reading confidence and is a great opportunity to practise our phonics!

Farthing Wood Class update

We’ve had another wonderful week in Farthing Wood Class. This week I have had the pleasure of hearing all the children read and I am blown away by how amazing they all are. Thank you for reading with your child at home. It makes such a difference to your child’s progress.
In Phonics we have introduced the Tricky Witch digraph ‘oi’ as in oil, foil, coin, tinfoil, poison and toilet! The children have learnt how to write these words using a phoneme frame and segmenting each word to write them in their own box – foil = f-oi-l.
The children have been using their phonics knowledge to create their own flashcards and hide them around the room for others to find!
In English we have continued with ‘Drawing Club’ this week and have been reading the story ‘Penguin’ by Polly Dunbar. The children really liked the character of the Penguin. We have drawn where the Lion might live, Thought about what else the Lion could eat and how we could rescue the Penguin from the Lion’s tummy! The children have the most fantastic imagination and used their Monster Phonics knowledge and wrote the most wonderful descriptive sentences explaining what they have drawn!
In Maths we are consolidating our learning. We have been playing lots of maths games this week – hopscotch, snap and the bean bag throwing game. The children had to take it in turns to throw 6 bean bags at a hoop and record using a tally chart how many they got inside the hoop. They then compared their result with their friends to find out who was the winner – it was very competitive! We have also been recapping our number bonds to 10 and the children are doing brilliantly at remembering the numbers which go together – 8 and 2, 10 and 0, 9 and 1 etc.
In Topic we have been exploring one of the children’s interests from last week. We have been exploring ‘Space’. We have learnt all about Astronauts and who the first person in space was. We have created our very own Rockets to blast us into space. We have looked at all the planets in the solar system and then created our own planet that we would like to visit – we used the amazing technique of ink marbling and the planets look magical.
It was lovely to see so many of you at parents’ evening. It really is a pleasure to share with you all the fantastic progress your child has made so far. It is a privilege to teach such a wonderful group of children.

Please remember that PE is Tuesday 26th March next week instead of the normal Monday. Please send your child into School wearing their PE kit.
Please ensure you send wellies and waterproofs with your child to keep in their locker at school. Children need to have a pair of shoes/trainers to wear whilst at school – wellies are not suitable to wear all day.
Please remember to send your child’s Handwriting Homework Book back on a Monday – thank you.
We love to see what adventures your child gets up to at home – clubs they attend , baking, reading, making dens, being creative, going on nature walks. Tapestry is a wonderful place to share these with us and the class – please upload your photos and a brief description so we can share these together during circle time.

In Maths, we are continuing our learning about multiplication, focusing on the 2 and 10 x tables. In Topic, we have been learning about food chains as well as the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. and even went on a scavenger hunt to explore our senses!

Neverland Class update

This week in phonics we have started recapping the sounds we have been learning throughout the year – who knew we could remember so many sounds and words! In Maths we have been deepening our understanding of tens and how we can add and subtract them. In English, we have started our new story ‘The Koala Who Could’ by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. We have thoroughly enjoyed this story and have become motivated to attempt the things we find hard too. Please continue to bring in reading packs and don’t forget, reading at home could earn you an extra 5 Mundesley Merits every week!

Farthing Wood Class update

We hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day and loved your cards as much as the children loved making them. Painting with watercolour can be quite tricky but I’m sure you’ll agree that they did a splendid job.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our ’Create & Collaborate’ parent event. We hope you all had a wonderful time designing and creating biscuits and enjoyed looking at your child’s ‘I Can’ book – I know they really enjoyed sharing them with you!
In Phonics we have introduced the Tricky Witch trigraph (three letters that make one sound) ‘air’ as in air, fair, chair, stairs, hair, airport. The children have learnt how to write these words using a phoneme frame and segmenting each word to write them in their own box – fair = f – air, airport = air – p – or – t.
In English we have continued with ‘Drawing Club’ this week and have been watching a short clip from ‘Wacky Races’. The children loved Dastardly and Muttley. We have drawn our own wacky racing cars, our own mascots and our own baddies! The children have the most fantastic imagination and used their Monster Phonics knowledge and wrote the most wonderful descriptive sentences explaining what they have drawn!
In Maths we are continuing with our phase ‘Building 9 and 10’. We have been looking at 3D shapes – cuboid, sphere, cone, cylinder and what makes them unique. I then went on a shape hunt around my home and made groups of objects and the children had to guess what shape they were. They got it correct every time! The children then went on a shape hunt around school and found some brilliant examples of 3D shapes.
Can they find any at home to show you?
We have also been looking at repeating patterns. We started by looking at ABAB patterns (red, green, red, green) and then progressed to tricker repeating patterns such as ABBABB (red, green, green, red, green, green) or ABCABC (red, green, blue, red, green, blue).
In Topic we have been looking at ‘Likes and Dislikes’. We looked at various things such as chocolate, books, rainbows, thunder etc and the children had to decide if they liked or disliked them. We also looked at hobbies and interests and we talked about the importance of them choosing if they liked or disliked it and giving an explanation as to why, not just copying their peers. We then compare what we liked and disliked to those of our Grandparents – thank you to those who filled in the survey! We then talked about similarities and differences between us in the present and our Grandparents in the past. It has been such an interesting topic to discuss.

Please remember that PE is on a Monday and we expect children to come into School wearing their PE kit. The week commencing 25th march PE will be on Tuesday 26th March instead of the normal Monday.

We have also been very excited about our school trip to Banham Zoo on Friday and can’t wait to see lots of exciting animals!

Farthing Wood Class update

Wow! It was amazing to see all the children in their wonderful World Book Day costumes on Thursday and it was a pleasure to share the morning with you doing lots of different activities – I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
In Phonics we have introduced the Yellow I trigraph (3 letters 1 sound) ‘igh’ as in light, fight, might, sigh, high. The children have loved doing the action for this sound and we have learnt all about Yellow I and her job as a lighthouse keeper and a secret spy!
The children have been busy using their phonics knowledge to write igh words in their phoneme frame making sure each sound is in its own box.
In English we have continued with ‘Drawing Club’ this week and have been reading the traditional tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have drawn the troll, the bridge, how we would rescue the troll from the river and drawn new animals that might dare try and cross the troll’s bridge! The children have the most fantastic imagination and used their Monster Phonics knowledge and wrote the most wonderful descriptive sentences explaining what they have drawn!
In Maths we are continuing with our phase ‘Building 9 and 10’. We have been busy this week singing the song ‘there was one in the bed’ and collaboratively ordering numbers from 10 to 1. The children were much better at it than me! We discovered there are lots of different ways to make10 and have been learning all about number bonds (recalling numbers which together make 10 – 8 and 2, 6 and 4 ect) and we have been picking a number by rolling a dice and using a number track looking at numbers that are more or fewer than our chosen number.
In Topic we have been looking at ‘Spring and Grandparents’. We talked about the early signs of spring and talked about what we had already seen – buds on the trees, snowdrops, blossoms on the trees and even planting bulbs at home. We then talked about our grandparents and looked at what their favourite toys were when they were 4 and 5. We also looked at the electronics they may have used and talked about the similarities and differences to the ones we use now.
A questionnaire has been shared with you regarding the children’s grandparents’ likes and dislikes. We would really appreciate it if you could fill it in over the weekend – Thank you!

Please remember that PE is on a Monday and we expect children to come into School wearing their PE kit – a letter reminding you of the correct PE kit has been sent home.
Please ensure you send wellies and waterproofs with your child to keep in their locker at school.
Please remember to send your child’s Handwriting Homework Book back on a Monday – thank you.
